In practical applications, sunscreen and antioxidant ingredients can be attached directly to skin to provide extended term benefits since such chemically bonded ingredients are not removed by washing or rubbing actions, and they generally will last until the skin is shed. But, in other cases, in order to achieve chemical bonding (chemically reactive forms of bonding components) we will have to employ such as alkylating agents, diazonium salts, and anhydrides. The name Saponins comes from the Latin word sapo, which means soap. This classical definition of Saponins is based on their surface activity, because they mostly have detergent properties. However, because of the numerous exceptions that exist, saponins are now more conveniently defined on the basis of their molecular structure, namely as triterpene or steroid glycosides.

Saponins became popular in 1927, since its appearance in Koflers book Die Saponine as the constituent of many plant drugs and folks medicines, especially in the East/, Asia. Kofler described in great detail the properties and pharmacological activities of this natural product but at that time not a single saponin had been fully characterized. Only in 1987 the structure of over 360 sapogenins and 750 triterpene glycosides had been elucidated (Bader and Hiller, 1987). This rapid progress is the result of the many dramatic advances in isolation and structure elucidation techniques.

The most common source of saponins are the higher plants such as Quillaja saponaria (soapbark)- -from South America and the most popular one to be used, Saponaria officinalis (soapwort), or Sapindus saponaria (soapberry), and in lower marine animals such as the marine phylum Echinodermata, Holothuroidea (sea cucumbers) and Asteroidea (starfishes).

Saponins from Quillaja saponaria, in contrast to most other Saponins species,are acylated and can be separated through alkaline hydrolysis into two domains: a desacylsaponin of QS-21 and the fatty acid domain. The QS-21 is highly effective in inducing CTL (cytotoxic T lymphocyte) response to exogenously added antigens. The use of surface-active agents like this kind of Saponins may facilitate the uptake of antigen into the cytoplasm of antigen, presenting cells through saponins permeabilization of cell membranes.
